Rare tiger shot dead by hunter who claims he was 'attacked' by the predator which 'killed his dog'

One of only 500 of the largest cats in the world left in the Siberian wild is gunned down in Kharbarovsk region.

Hunting the Siberian or Amur tiger is illegal but the animals are valuable on the black market, especially for export to China for medicinal cures. Picture: REN-TV

An unnamed hunter said he was mauled by the rare Amur tiger which bit his legs after killing his dog. The man claimed he was hunting wild boar when the tiger pounced. He killed the big cat in self defence, he said.

But investigators are now checking this version for any clues that the 60 year old could have been a tiger poacher. Hunting the Siberian or Amur tiger is illegal but the animals are valuable on the black market, especially for export to China for medicinal cures. The hunter was rescued and rushed to hospital after he used his cell phone to alert relatives of the attack.

Director of the Primorsky branch of the centre 'Amur Tiger' Sergei Aramilev commented: 'The true picture of events will be found out when we match a map of the scene, the hunter's testimony, autopsy results and a follow-up examination.'

He said Siberian tigers 'very seldom attack people without a reason. There have been cases when people killed tigers to sell them and made up stories about self-defence,' he said. Tigers have attacked when they have been wounded by hunters, he said.

It is wrong for anyone to rush to judgment either way until the investigation is complete. If the boar hunter legitimately defended himself against the tiger, then you should be glad that the hunter is alive at the expense of the tiger, even if there are only 500 left. If was poaching, then he should be punished according to the law. Anyone who prejudges this man is simply exposing their anti-hunting bias. Clearly some of you haven't even read the entire article or else you'd know that the man was carrying a gun in the woods because he was hunting wild boar.

Why must a man who kill a tiger justify his action? Ridiculous, tigers are useless a cruel beasts, the death of one of them living in the wild is a bless. They are dangerous and coward men-eaters...

They act about tigers like the 'lower 48'ers' act about bears...for God fricken sake leave them alone and they will leave you alone...if they are hungry leave a salt block...put it far enough away to keep them from coming closer to your residence...keep small animals inside....you could set up a remote camera and you might get some National Geographic material... So don't go killing what might be defending you in the future now...

If there WAS a dog , the tiger would have left the area , so what this guy is saying is BULL S--T. So what is he doing out in the woods with a gun anyway . He should be taken out in the woods & hunted , and if he gets away without getting his ass shot . then some jail time and a big fine .

What gets me is how an unarmed man at 60 years old shoot a Amur Tiger which killed his dogs bit his leg and next minute a 500lb tiger is dead bloody hell more holes in this story than a Swiss cheese well another great beast less on earth and I was holding out great hopes for the Russian authorities doing the job better than any western government but sadly ir t seems not .

He's a liar! !! What would give this cat a reason to attack? ? There is no marks on the hunter and why are we calling him a hunter if he was not hunting?? He was looking for something to kill and look what he found. Just wrong. There needs to be repercussions to his actions. Hang him by his balls

Again we lost one more magnificent animal. It’s a big loss for biodiversity. How long we have to witness such cruelty. Culprit should be punished at any cost. Concern authorities should be more vigilant, in order to protect the endangered species.
